Read five candles without displaying what follows

Bar Replay lets you return to a past candle, hide the following ones and reveal them gradually. You will use it to record an observation before seeing what comes next, without placing an order.

Start with 1D (1 day): Basic includes daily Replay and higher timeframes. Intraday Replay, including 1h, requires a paid plan. Official TradingView comparison.

Available history also depends on the symbol. "All history" means the data available for that symbol, not every imaginable date. Available Replay history.

A TradingView Basic account and a notebook are enough. Keep your existing account; no purchase, Strategy Arena account or Lab installation is needed.

Free exercise: 3 to 5 minutes, no orders

First minute: open Replay

  1. For example, open BINANCE:BTCUSDT with standard candles, 1D. Keep one chart and remove annotations that reveal what happens next. This asset is only an interface example.
  2. Click Replay at the top. Choose a candle a few months back, in a period you do not know by heart.
  3. Stay paused. Locate Forward to reveal one candle at a time without starting automatic playback.

These controls are described in the official Replay setup guide.

Next two to three minutes: observe a fixed level

Before advancing, write down the symbol, 1D timeframe, start date and the high of the last visible candle. That price is your fixed level for the next five candles.

Write the criterion: "I will record whether the next candle closes above this level." Click Forward once, then record the date and answer yes or no. A wick above the level followed by a close below it does not meet this criterion. Repeat until you have five observations.

Your notebook only needs three columns: date / close above the level? / note. Do not move the level after seeing a candle. You do not need to use any Buy or Sell button.

Final minute: review and finish

Check that you kept the same criterion and distinguished wicks from closes. Five consistent entries are enough to finish; no particular number of "yes" answers is expected, and this is not a win rate.

Use the return-to-real-time command to go back to the current chart, then close Replay. Ending Replay.

Replay and Paper Trading: two different clocks

Paper Trading uses current market prices, even when you are looking at an old candle in Replay. It cannot buy at the historical price on that chart. Existing alerts also stay on current data; new server-side alerts cannot be created during Replay. Official Replay limitations.

A separate feature, Replay Trading, simulates orders in the past. Do not confuse it with the Paper Trading account. It is optional here: check access under your plan if you explore it later. Our exercise uses only the chart and a notebook. Trading on historical data.

To learn simulated account controls in the current market next, follow the Paper Trading guide after leaving Replay. Do not connect a real broker for these exercises.

If Replay will not start

  • A paid offer appears: check that the timeframe is 1D, not 1h, and that you are opening Replay rather than a simulated trading option. No paid subscription is required for the exercise described here.
  • The date is unavailable: choose a more recent date or look for the first available day in the date selector. History limits.
  • The chart type is unsupported: return to standard candles, without a synthetic chart such as Renko or Range. Replay compatibility.

What this exercise tells you

You have practised stepping through history and applying a written criterion. You have not measured a strategy's profitability: there is no complete entry and exit rule, no fees and no execution simulation here. Nothing in this exercise establishes protection against future losses.

Replaying a familiar period can help you learn the controls, but your memory then influences your observations. For another session, choose a different period and write your criteria before revealing what follows. That still does not validate a strategy.

Strategy Arena's free Quick Check is a compatibility check, not a validation of performance. It is not needed for this exercise.
