7 Frameworks Grade Your Trading Strategy A+ to F: How Strategy Health Check Works

A strategy that returned 12% last quarter might be falling apart right now. Drawdowns creep up. Win rates erode. Risk-adjusted returns decay. By the time you notice, the damage is done.

Strategy Arena's Strategy Health Check catches this early. Seven independent evaluation frameworks analyze every strategy from different angles and assign grades from A+ to F. If five frameworks say A but two say D, you know exactly where the weakness is.

The 7 Evaluation Frameworks

Each framework examines a different dimension of strategy health:

1. Return Quality

Raw returns are misleading without context. This framework evaluates returns relative to risk taken, market conditions, and capital efficiency. A strategy making 8% with 3% max drawdown scores higher than one making 15% with 20% drawdown.

2. Drawdown Resilience

How deep does the strategy dip, and how fast does it recover? This framework tracks maximum drawdown, average drawdown duration, and recovery speed. Strategies that bounce back quickly from losses earn higher grades.

3. Consistency Score

Does the strategy perform steadily, or does it spike and crash? This framework measures the standard deviation of returns across rolling windows. A consistent 1% per week beats an erratic pattern of +10% then -8%.

4. Regime Adaptability

Markets cycle through trends, ranges, and volatility spikes. This framework tests whether the strategy performs across all three regimes or only thrives in one. A strategy that only works in bull markets gets penalized.

5. Risk-Adjusted Metrics

Sharpe ratio, Sortino ratio, Calmar ratio -- this framework aggregates multiple risk-adjusted performance measures into a single grade. It answers the question: is the return worth the risk?

6. Decay Detection

The most forward-looking framework. It compares recent performance (last 7-14 days) against historical averages. If the strategy's edge is fading -- lower win rates, smaller average wins, larger average losses -- this framework flags it before the P&L chart shows it.

7. Robustness Check

Based on Monte Carlo simulation principles, this framework tests whether the strategy's returns are statistically significant or potentially the result of luck. It looks at the distribution of trade outcomes and checks whether small parameter changes destroy the edge.

How Grades Work

Each framework assigns an independent grade:

  • A+ / A: Excellent -- top-tier performance in this dimension
  • B+ / B: Good -- solid but room for improvement
  • C+ / C: Average -- acceptable but watch closely
  • D: Below average -- this dimension needs attention
  • F: Failing -- serious concern, consider reducing exposure

The overall grade is a weighted composite, but Strategy Arena shows you each individual framework's grade so you can see exactly where strengths and weaknesses lie.

Real Example: Catching Decay Early

Imagine a momentum strategy graded as follows:

  • Return Quality: A
  • Drawdown Resilience: B+
  • Consistency: A
  • Regime Adaptability: C (only works in trends)
  • Risk-Adjusted: A
  • Decay Detection: D (edge fading over last 10 days)
  • Robustness: B

Overall grade: B+. Looks fine on the surface. But that D in Decay Detection is a warning shot. The strategy is losing its edge right now, even though cumulative P&L still looks strong. Without this framework, you would not notice until weeks later when the P&L chart turns red.

Where the Grades Feed Into

Health Check grades are not isolated. They connect to the broader Strategy Arena ecosystem:

  • The Dashboard displays current grades alongside P&L for every strategy.
  • The Living Wiki documents grade history and explanations for major grade changes.
  • The Evolution Lab uses Health Check grades as fitness signals -- strategies with declining grades become candidates for parameter mutation or retirement.

Who Should Use This

Anyone who runs or follows trading strategies. Whether you are evaluating Strategy Arena's 50+ built-in strategies or assessing your own approach, the 7-framework grading system gives you a structured, quantitative view of strategy health that goes far beyond simple return tracking.

FAQ

How often are strategy grades updated?

Grades are recalculated after every trading cycle. The Decay Detection framework is particularly sensitive to recent data, so it can shift quickly -- a strategy might go from B to D in Decay Detection within a few days if its edge deteriorates.

Can a strategy have an A overall but an F in one framework?

Yes. The overall grade is a weighted composite, so strong performance in six frameworks can offset a failing grade in one. However, Strategy Arena highlights any F grades prominently -- a single failing dimension deserves your attention even if the composite looks healthy.

What is the difference between Health Check and backtesting?

Backtesting evaluates historical performance of a strategy against past data. Health Check evaluates the current, ongoing health of a live strategy -- including forward-looking metrics like Decay Detection that backtesting cannot provide. For historical analysis, see the Backtest Engine.
