Which TradingView plan should you pick? Free first
Short answer: start free, stay free until something actually blocks you
It is counter-intuitive coming from a TradingView partner site, but it is our position: a beginner almost never needs a paid plan in the first month. The free account covers everything that matters for learning:
- open charts and save them;
- build a watchlist;
- place indicators and alerts;
- trade on paper with Paper Trading;
- replay the past with Bar Replay;
- write and test your first Pine scripts.
Paying before you have used that up is buying power you do not yet know how to use.
No account yet? The 7-step Starter path starts from creation — on the free plan, on purpose (disclosed partner link for new accounts, neutral link if you already have one).
How to recognize a REAL limit
The right time to pay is not “when you feel serious”. It is when you hit a free-plan wall, several times a week. Typical signals:
- indicators: you regularly need more on one chart than the free plan allows — not as a collection, but because your method actually uses them;
- alerts: your alert system (see our guide) has become a real dashboard and the quota slows you every week;
- multiple charts: you truly work several assets in parallel and a single tab slows you down;
- timeframes and history: your approach needs setups the free plan does not offer.
If you hesitate to classify your case, the limit is not real yet. A real limit does not debate: it annoys you every day.
We deliberately list no numbers here (quotas, prices): they change. The only reliable source is TradingView's official pricing page, which compares current plans.
Three fake reasons to pay
Before real limits, drop the fake motives — they show up in almost every beginner:
- “Paying will make me serious.” No: discipline comes from the journal and written rules, not the invoice. A subscription does not watch your stops for you.
- “Pros all have the big plan.” Heavy usage justifies their tools; copying the kit without copying the hours is buying the jersey and expecting to win the match.
- “There's a promo.” A discount on a need you do not have is still a spend. The promo will return; your real limit will find you.
The day you pay: two rules
Rule 1 — buy from the website, never from the mobile app. Purchases through app stores add middlemen; TradingView itself steers subscriptions to the web. That is also the condition for new-account benefits to apply cleanly.
Rule 2 — take the plan just above your limit, not the biggest one. The vast majority of a solo trader's needs fit in the first tiers. The top tier is for very specific heavy use; you will know if that is you — again — because a concrete limit will tell you.
And if TradingView offers a trial: use it as a real test of your need, not as a commitment. During the trial, note every time a paid feature actually helps. Zero notes = back to free.
What no subscription will do for you
Say it plainly: moving up a plan does not improve your decisions. More indicators have never turned a mediocre idea into a good strategy — more often the opposite: the pile hides the reasoning.
The progress that matters is elsewhere: a written rule, tested in Bar Replay, executed in Paper Trading with a journal. And the day your rule becomes a script, the question is no longer “which plan?” but “does my strategy survive data it has never seen?” — that is the job of the free Quick Check and Strategy Arena's independent audit. Our GPU produced a +172% strategy that lost 37% out of sample; no plan tier protects you from that.
In short
- Today: free account, and the first-day path;
- this month: alerts, Paper Trading, Bar Replay — all free;
- the day a limit annoys you daily: official pricing page, buy on the web, tier just above the need;
- always: your method progresses, not your invoice.
