TradingView Strategy Tester vs Strategy Arena Lab

📅 2026-10-28
✍️ Strategy Arena
pine script tradingview backtest strategy tester lab

Short answer: the two tools are complementary. TradingView's Strategy Tester is where you write and visualise a Pine on the chart. Strategy Arena Lab is where you check the trades one by one, count the variants you tried and judge the rule on a period kept sealed during the research. One helps you state the idea; the other helps you decide whether it holds.

The same Pine can show a decent report in TradingView and fail elsewhere: the two tools do not answer the same question. The Strategy Tester shows what your settings produce on the history you loaded. The Lab asks whether the rule survives data that was not used to choose it.

What each tool does

The Strategy Tester is built into the TradingView chart. It shows a performance report, lets you change the strategy's parameters and read the list of trades. It is the natural place to write a rule, change an indicator length and see the effect on the chart immediately.

Strategy Arena Lab is a free desktop app for Windows and Linux. You paste a Pine strategy, write an idea in plain words, or let an AI drive it over MCP. It replays the strategy under TradingView's rules (tv_exact_v1 since version 241), searches variants on the training part only, then opens the sealed final part once and returns a verdict: survived the unseen test, likely a mirage or inconclusive. It can also answer that there are not enough trades to judge. The public build 0.1.0-253 (build 20261027-253-n1) was published on 27 October 2026; installer SHA-256 hashes are on /en/download.

When to use the Strategy Tester

The Strategy Tester is the right tool at the start, while the question is still "does my rule do what I think it does?". You write a few lines of Pine, add them to the chart, set the parameters and read the list of trades. That is where you catch an inverted condition, a badly initialised indicator or an exit that never fires. Its strength is the short loop: change, look, fix.

Its limit is the same as its strength: the report describes the settings you chose on the history you loaded. It does not say how many variants you tried before landing there, nor whether the period you tuned on resembles the next one. A flattering report can therefore come from a choice rather than a discovery.

When to add the Lab

The Lab comes in when the question becomes: does this rule hold on data that was not used to set it? Three things separate it from the Strategy Tester.

First, trade comparison. The Lab replays the Pine under TradingView's rules and compares the trade lists one by one. Its documented method gives identical lists on the published cases: 258/258, 97/97 and 26/26 on 13 October 2026, and 62/62 on a buy stop order with build 0.1.0-249. That parity is about reproduction, not profit: two engines that produce the same trades can both find the rule fragile.

Second, counting. Every variant tried is counted. That is what stops the best result of a long series from being presented as "the" strategy. The verdict relies on the probability of backtest overfitting (PBO), a Sharpe ratio deflated by the number of attempts, Hansen's SPA test against buy-and-hold, CPCV, walk-forward and Monte Carlo.

Third, the seal. The end of the data is sealed and the seal is written to disk before any computation; the final part is opened once. In the Play / Think / Judge proof shown on /en/download, the seal covers the final 20% of the bars; in an MCP research session it covers 30% of the window by default. A payment never changes a verdict.

The Lab runs locally: it listens only on 127.0.0.1 with a private token, the MCP connection sends nothing to Strategy Arena, and no tool places an order, opens TradingView, publishes or pays. An AI can therefore search settings without your data leaving the machine.

The five-step workflow

  1. Write in TradingView. Start from the Strategy Tester: a readable rule, named parameters, a list of trades you can explain.
  2. Import into the Lab. Paste the Pine into the app. If the script is not supported, the importer refuses it with the reason rather than testing a different strategy.
  3. Check the parity. Replay the rule and compare the trades with TradingView. The published method for that parity is described in this protocol. If the lists diverge, the problem is in reproduction, not in the verdict.
  4. Search the variants. Change one parameter at a time and let the Lab count the trials. The search runs on the training part; the sealed part stays closed.
  5. Let the judge decide. Open the sealed proof once and read the verdict: survived, mirage, inconclusive, or not enough trades to judge. An unfavourable verdict is still a useful result.

This workflow does not require leaving TradingView: it adds a control step between the idea and the confidence. For other routes (Python, LEAN, MQL5, NinjaScript), see the article on Pine Script alternatives.

Limits of the Lab

The Lab does not support all Pine. A script outside the accepted subset is refused with the reason. That is not a failure of the strategy, only an impossibility to test it on the same terms.

It guarantees no future result: a favourable verdict covers past data, with part of it sealed during the search. Inconclusive is a valid outcome, not a bug.

The seal has a known limit: it stops an AI from reading the sealed candles, not from remembering market history learned in training. That is why the verdict also requires beating buy-and-hold, enough independent events and a majority of winning folds.

Finally, the Lab is a local research instrument, not a broker: it places no order and promises no profit.

FAQ

Do the two tools do the same thing? No. The Strategy Tester is where you write and visualise a Pine inside TradingView. The Lab checks the trades one by one, counts the variants you tried and judges the rule on a sealed period. They complement each other.

Is the Lab free? Yes. The app is free for Windows and Linux, and the MCP connection, backtests, sweeps, Pine export and sealed proof are included. Paid plans and their current prices are on /pricing; paying never changes a verdict.

Can the Lab guarantee that a strategy will make money? No. It judges a rule on past data, part of which stays sealed during the search. A favourable verdict guarantees no future result, and inconclusive is a valid outcome.

Do I need to code to use the Lab? No. You can paste a Pine strategy, write an idea in plain words, or let an AI drive the Lab over the local MCP server. No tool places an order.
