Strategy Arena Lab, QuantConnect and Backtrader: Test a Pine Strategy Without Rewriting It in Python
To test a Pine strategy without rewriting it in Python, you need a tool that reads Pine. QuantConnect (Python, C#) and Backtrader (Python) do not: the strategy has to be ported by hand. Strategy Arena Lab, free and local, imports a subset of Pine, judges it on a sealed period and exports the exact Pine back.

|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Cloud platform + open-source LEAN engine | Open-source Python library | Desktop application |
| Strategy language | Python, C# | Python | ArenaScript; import of a Pine Script subset; Pine v5 export |
| Pine Script import | No (manual rewrite) | No (manual rewrite) | Yes, deterministic subset |

The real question: rewrite or not
A strategy born in TradingView is written in Pine Script. To test it elsewhere, there are two paths:
- Port it to another language (Python or C#), then test it in a richer framework. That is the QuantConnect and Backtrader path.
- Keep it in Pine and judge it with a tool that understands that Pine, then check in TradingView that it is the same strategy. That is the Strategy Arena Lab path.
Porting has a hidden cost: two engines do not necessarily fill orders the same way (bar boundaries, data source, order in which stops are processed). On the QuantConnect forum, the team answered that it does not accept Pine Script; the official documentation describes no import. If the port differs from the original, you are testing a different strategy from the one you see in TradingView, and nothing tells you so.
QuantConnect: multi-asset, data and live trading
QuantConnect is the most complete tool in this comparison for going from backtest to live trading across several asset classes.
- Assets: equities, forex, options, futures and crypto, in backtesting and live, according to its pricing page.
- Data: the Free tier includes unlimited backtesting and equity, index, forex, crypto, futures and options data.
- Live: from the Quant Researcher tier, with a long list of brokers (Interactive Brokers, Charles Schwab, TradeStation, Alpaca, Binance, Bybit, Kraken, Coinbase, Zerodha, among others). The Free tier includes neither live nor paper trading.
- Open source: the LEAN engine is published under the Apache 2.0 licence and uses Python or C#. The pricing grid lists local development ("Local Coding", LEAN CLI) from Quant Researcher upwards.
- Optimization: parameter optimization in the cloud; the documentation itself warns about overfitting and out-of-sample data.
A held-out period, a trial count and a single judgement are all possible in QuantConnect, but you have to build them and stick to them yourself.
Backtrader: the Python library you control end to end
Backtrader is a Python library for backtesting and trading, open source under the GPL-3.0 licence. Its README describes an order simulator (Market, Close, Limit, Stop…), TA-Lib support, analyzers, optimization through Cerebro, and live connections to Interactive Brokers, Oanda and Visual Chart.
Its strength is freedom: everything is Python you can read and change. The other side: everything is yours to do, from the data to the validation protocol. The site mentions no built-in walk-forward or out-of-sample testing. Its latest PyPI release, 1.9.78.123, dates from 19 April 2023.
Strategy Arena Lab: keep the Pine, seal the end
The Lab takes the opposite path: it does not ask you to leave Pine.
- Pine import and export. The Lab reads a deterministic subset of Pine Script and exports the judged strategy back to Pine v5, with its fees, window and execution policy. The 6 strategies of the AI leaderboard give 234 identical trades out of 234 in real TradingView; other series give 263 out of 263 (Bollinger, MACD) and 361 out of 361 (short margin calls).
- A built-in sealed period. The end of the history is sealed before any calculation, seal written to disk: 30% by default for a session driven by an AI, 20% in the first-session path.
- Counted trials. Every variant enters the deflated Sharpe ratio and the probability of backtest overfitting (PBO). The judge opens the period once and returns holds, mirage or inconclusive.
- Local, CPU and GPU. The Rust engine runs on your machine; the CPU is the final authority, CUDA speeds up the search on Windows with an NVIDIA card. On Linux, the Lab runs on CPU.
- Your AI at the controls. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, LM Studio or opencode drive the Lab over MCP, locally (127.0.0.1); the connection sends nothing to Strategy Arena.
Local or cloud?
| Criterion | Cloud (QuantConnect) | Local (Backtrader, LEAN locally, Strategy Arena Lab) |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Nothing to install | Software or a Python environment |
| Data | Provided, multi-asset | Yours (the Lab fetches public crypto candles) |
| Compute | The platform's | Your machine's (GPU possible in the Lab) |
| Code privacy | Code on the platform | Code and data on your disk |
| Live trading | Yes, built in | Backtrader yes; the Lab no |
| Long-term cost | Free for backtesting, paid for live | Free (Backtrader, Lab); Operator optional |
Neither model wins on its own: the cloud wins on data and live trading, local tools on control and privacy.
The Lab's limits
- No live trading, no broker, no real orders.
- No built-in equities, options or futures data as in QuantConnect: the Lab adds markets through public Binance or Crypto.com candles.
- Partial Pine import: a deterministic subset, not every script.
- No Python for writing strategies.
- No macOS; unsigned Windows installer (SHA-256 published).
- A research tool: a verdict describes the past.
Which one to choose?
- You want to trade live across several assets and brokers, in Python or C#: QuantConnect.
- You want an open Python library to shape as you like: Backtrader.
- You have a Pine strategy and want to judge it out of sample without rewriting it, then see it again in TradingView: Strategy Arena Lab.
Try the Lab
- Download Strategy Arena Lab, free for Windows and Linux.
- Plug your AI in over MCP.
- The Prisme workshop (French interface) to prepare an idea on a Bitcoin chart before testing it.

FAQ
Can you test a Pine Script strategy in QuantConnect or Backtrader?
Not directly. QuantConnect (the LEAN engine) uses Python or C#, Backtrader uses Python; a Pine strategy has to be rewritten by hand. Strategy Arena Lab imports a deterministic subset of Pine Script and exports the judged strategy back to Pine v5.
Is there a free tool to test a Pine strategy out of sample?
Yes. Strategy Arena Lab is free on Windows and Linux: it seals the end of the history before any calculation, counts the trials and returns a verdict of holds, mirage or inconclusive. A date switch in TradingView Basic also allows a manual test.
Local or cloud backtesting: which should you choose?
QuantConnect's cloud brings multi-asset data and live trading with nothing to install. Local tools (Backtrader, LEAN run locally, Strategy Arena Lab) keep code and data on your machine and do not depend on a subscription, but you manage your own data and hardware.
Is QuantConnect free?
QuantConnect offers a Free tier with unlimited backtesting and equity, index, forex, crypto, futures and options data. Live trading and paper trading require a paid tier, from Quant Researcher upwards, according to its pricing page on 17 October 2026.
Is Backtrader still maintained?
Backtrader is open source under the GPL-3.0 licence. Its latest release on PyPI, 1.9.78.123, dates from 19 April 2023. It remains usable, but check compatibility with your Python version and brokers.
Can Strategy Arena Lab trade live like QuantConnect?
No. The Lab connects to no broker and places no orders. It is a research and backtesting tool; for multi-broker live trading, QuantConnect is the suitable tool in this comparison.
